Haldi Doodh aka. Turmeric Milk

In India, milk is believed to provide utmost nutrition. It’s even considered a full diet, especially for children. I was born in the 80’s and milk formed a large part of my diet. (I am not sure if kids today drink it as much). Though Maltova and Complan exchanged our kitchen shelf space every couple of months, it was haldi doodh (milk with turmeric) that made its appearance every winter, especially when I was sick. Born with a weak constitution, I contracted cold and fever at the drop of a hat and haldi doodh shots offered constant support to my immune system and my mother’s anxiety.

Then I grew old and denounced milk altogether.  Until, a month ago, after 25 years, haldi doodh made its appearance in my kitchen when my husband fell sick. The Delhi weather has been choppy to say the least. And for anyone out there wishing to get well soon, this is the drink to take before you go to sleep. It even makes milk taste better.

I am planning to home grow turmeric, since it forms a part of everyday Indian cooking as well. My intention is to harvest an organic turmeric root, cook with it and then compare the flavor with the packaged commercial turmeric powders I buy from the marts.  I will keep you posted on my progress.

Happy Drinking!
